Oakville Seniors Need To Take Fire Safety Seriously, Study Shows

Research by Ontario’s Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management (OFMEM) showed that:

  • Seniors face disproportionately high risks of residential fire fatalities. In their study, which synthesized residential fire data from 2010 to 2019, 68% of victims were 50 or older, and nearly 1 in 5 (19%) were 60 to 69 years old.
  • Independent seniors are still at risk. While one-quarter (25%) of residential fire victims 65 or older had one or more disabilities, nearly one-third (30%) did not. Even if your loved one only needs help with a few of the activities of daily living, even if they have full mobility, they need to take fire safety seriously—and we can help.
  • Residential fires fatalities are preventable. Cigarettes were the most common fire ignition sources, responsible for more than one-quarter (27%) of all fatal residential fires between 2010-2019. At 9%, cooking equipment was a distant second. But in both cases, a little fire safety could have made all the difference.

Enhance Senior Fire Safety With In-Home Care In Oakville, ON

These are just a few of the ways our in-home care teams can help fireproof the home care environment:

  • Optimize your medication management. OFMEM research showed that 7% of fatal residential fire victims aged 65+ were impaired by drugs or alcohol. With a large percentage of Oakville’s seniors taking medication, and many of them now facing the risks of polypharmacy, proper medication management is critical. Our in-home care team can help, facilitating better communication with doctors and pharmacists, monitoring usage, implementing a medication routine, and assisting with organization and prescription-filling.
  • Leave the cooking to us. Unattended cooking is the most common cause of non-fatal residential fires in Ontario, and the risks only increase as our mobility and vision decline with age. By leaving the cooking up to us, you get to enjoy healthy meals with real peace of mind.
  • Enjoy candles with confidence. Our in-home care team will monitor candles at home so your loved one can create the smell and ambiance they like, anytime, with complete peace of mind.
  • Eliminate the risks of smoking. In addition to monitoring your loved one’s smoking, we can help them butt out for good by purchasing cessation aids, providing motivation and distraction when cravings hit, and keeping cigarettes out of the house.
  • Fireproof the home care environment. Our in-home care teams can clear clutter, keep inflammable items (e.g. loose clothing, towels) away from the stovetop, install smoke alarms, make sure electronics are used safely and unplugged afterwards, and much more—all you need to do is ask!
